News Release - April 6, 2004 DO NOT PRUNE ELM TREES FROM APRIL 13TH TO JULY 31ST
To reduce the risk of Dutch elm disease, pruning of elm trees is prohibited from April 13th until July 31st throughout Saskatchewan.
Provincial regulations ban the pruning of elms during this time each year. Fresh cuts from pruning attract the beetles that can spread the disease, and increase the chance of an infection. Pruning of dead and dying elm branches is encouraged before April 13th and after July 31st. This helps to reduce beetle breeding habitat and control the beetle population. Prompt and proper disposal of the pruned wood is essential to keep the disease from spreading. "By working together, we can prevent Dutch elm disease," Environment Minister David Forbes said. "Not pruning elms during the ban period is a simple thing we can all do to protect the elms in our communities."
