News Release - May 16, 2011 PROVINCE CONGRATULATES FSIN AND MÉTIS NATION ON SUCCESSFUL NORTH AMERICAN INDIGENOUS GAMES BIDSaskatchewan is set to welcome Indigenous athletes from around North America in 2014 when Regina hosts the North American Indigenous Games. The successful bid was put forward by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) and Métis Nation - Saskatchewan, along with the Province of Saskatchewan and City of Regina. The committee flew to Moncton, New Brunswick on Friday, May 13 to make its final presentation that resulted in the successful bid. "Congratulations to FSIN, Métis Nation - Saskatchewan and the bid committee for putting together the successful bid," First Nations and Métis Relations Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. "We can't wait to welcome Indigenous athletes from around North America to Saskatchewan, and look forward to showing them what our great province has to offer." The Games are a two week event which will attract up to 10,000 athletes, coaches, families and supporters. The budget for the games is $10.35 million, with the province contributing $3.5 million, which is matched by Sport Canada. The City of Regina contributed $1.1 million, and the rest will be raised through registration fees, destination marketing fees, sponsorship and fundraising. "It was a pleasure to be in Moncton and help present the many advantages Saskatchewan holds for the North American Indigenous Games," Cheveldayoff said. "I believe our volunteer base, our track record in delivering world class events, our wonderful venues, and the strong partnerships of the bid committee members set us apart." Other competitors in the bid process included London, Ontario and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
