News Release - December 10, 2009 CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNORIt is my pleasure to bring you greetings at this special time of year. It is a great privilege to serve as Saskatchewan's Lieutenant Governor. This unique position gives me the opportunity to travel across our beautiful province and to meet so many remarkable people. We are fortunate to have an exceptionally diverse population. Some have descended from immigrants, some who arrived here over one hundred years ago, and others who have arrived more recently. Our provincial motto is well chosen for our diverse province: "From many people's strength". Saskatchewan people are diverse, and they are also generous. I have met thousands of committed volunteers, who support charities, the arts and sport, children's programs and a host of other worthy causes. Our citizens are known for their volunteerism, and they are also famous for their strong work ethic. I have met people in communities throughout Saskatchewan, who pitch in wherever there is a need. The pioneers, who helped to establish our province, had to work hard to survive. That tradition of hard work continues today in our communities. Saskatchewan people are determined and resilient. Many face significant challenges, but I have been deeply impressed by those who approach difficult circumstances with courage and hope. Our people are creative problem-solvers, who have given the world numerous innovative ideas. Saskatchewan is full of promising young people. I have come to know many youth who are, already, filling leadership roles in their communities. These inspiring young people are a tremendous resource for Saskatchewan. I have met capable people across our province who provide leadership at the local, provincial, and national levels. Living in a democracy comes with responsibilities. Voting and elections are important, but much more is required. Our successful system of government, our rights and freedoms, and our standard of living, rely on individuals who are willing to serve on boards and committees, provide mentorship, and donate their time to the community. As we enjoy this holiday season and reflect upon our countless blessings, it is the perfect time to thank the people in our neighbourhoods, in our towns, and in our cities, who contribute to the greater good. I encourage you to consider how you can give back to your community. Every non-profit organization needs people who are willing to serve. If you choose to make service a priority, I guarantee that you will gain more than you give. I will close with the words of Saskatchewan's Head of State, Her Majesty the Queen of Canada. During her 1992 visit to our nation, she addressed the country from Parliament Hill on July 1. She said, "You have inherited a country uniquely worth preserving. I call on you all, wherever you may live, whatever your walk of life, to cherish that inheritance and to protect it with all your strength." As we cherish our lives in Canada, and give thanks for the hard-working, generous, and compassionate people who call Saskatchewan home, I wish you all a joyous holiday season, filled with peace, hope and love. -30- |
