News Release - March 12, 2003 FLASKS RECALLED
The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) is issuing a public recall of metal flasks used in a number of gift packages sold in Saskatchewan. Two gift packages containing a 750 ml bottle of Wiser's Deluxe Whisky and a flask and a separate gift package containing a 750 ml bottle of Bacardi White Rum and a flask have been recalled. These products were sold in Saskatchewan liquor stores and franchises for three years -- during the 2000, 2001 and 2002 holiday seasons.
The affected flask in the Bacardi gift package is a square, four-ounce stainless steel flask with a pewter "bat" device attached to it. The Wiser's Deluxe gift packages incorporated three flasks: a plain stainless steel flask with "Wiser's" embossed in the steel; a stainless steel flask with a dark brown leather covering embossed with an oval "Wiser's" logo; and a stainless steel flask with a medium-brown leather covering with an embossed "Wiser's" logo. The national voluntary recall was issued by Corby Distilleries and Bacardi Canada Inc. upon the advice of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario's Quality Assurance Division. There is no problem with the Wiser's Deluxe or Bacardi products; however, tests have shown that there may be a problem with lead leaching from the flasks once the whisky, rum or any other beverage is added to the flask. Tests have shown the lead content to be slightly higher than allowable limits permitted. At this time, there have been no reported illnesses associated with these products. This recall pertains to the flasks only, and does not apply to Wiser's Deluxe Whisky or Bacardi White Rum. Anyone with a flask can return it to any SLGA liquor store or franchise for a full refund. -30- For More Information, Contact:
