CROP REPORT FOR THE PERIOD MAY 3 TO 9, 2011

Five per cent of the 2011 crop has been seeded, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture's Weekly Crop Report. The five year (2006-2010) average for this time of year is approximately 14 per cent seeded.

The southwest is reporting 13 per cent seeded and the southeastern and west-central regions are reporting five per cent seeded. One per cent of the crop is seeded in the east-central, northeastern and northwestern regions. The majority of Saskatchewan producers got a late start to field work due to excess moisture. Most areas reported rain last week that will further delay seeding.

The majority of crop reporters are indicating that fields are still very wet. Cropland topsoil moisture across the province is rated as 55 per cent surplus and 45 per cent adequate. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 40 per cent surplus, 59 per cent adequate and one per cent short.

Farmers are busy calving, hauling cattle to pasture, controlling weeds and seeding.
