REGINA-AREA CONSTRUCTION FIRM FINED FOR SAFETY VIOLATIONS

Fred Thue Construction Ltd. has been convicted of four charges under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and fined a total of $3,020 in Regina Provincial Court.

The charges relate to a routine inspection of a Regina worksite by an Occupational Health Officer in November, 2009. Workers were observed installing overhead door support beams without fall protection. The safety violations included failure to use a fall protection system, wear protective headwear, and elevating workers with a forklift without an approved elevating platform.

Fred Thue Construction Ltd. was acquitted of one charge and one other charge was stayed.

Injuries caused by falls represent almost 13 per cent of all workplace injuries reported. OHS has a zero tolerance approach to violations of fall protection.

OHS conducts about 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.
