News Release - July 31, 2006 NORTHERN OVERTIME EXEMPTION – AUGUST MEETINGS
Public and stakeholder consultations on the Northern Overtime Exemption will begin August 8th in La Loche.
The consultations are a critical part of the work being done by Regina Northeast MLA Ron Harper to examine the impact of the overtime exemption currently in place for Saskatchewan's North. Harper will consult with northern representatives including workers and businesses, First Nations and Métis leaders and community groups, during August and September. "Northerners have lived with this regulation for more than 50 years," Harper said. "Their input is vital to the success of these consultations, and I look forward to this opportunity to hear their opinions first-hand." Consultations will cover the west, central and east areas of Northern Saskatchewan. A schedule of September meetings, including a far north tour, will be announced in August. Scheduled August Meetings: • La Loche - Community Hall, August 8th, 7:00 p.m. • Beauval - Arena Mezzanine, August 9th, 7:00 p.m. • Buffalo Narrows - Lakeview Complex (arena), August 10th, 7:00 p.m. • Creighton/Denare Beach - Sportex Lounge, August 29th, 7:00 p.m. • Sandy Bay - Village Office, August 30th, Noon • Pelican Narrows - Community Hall, August 30th, 4:00 p.m. • Pinehouse - Community Hall, August 31st, 7:00 p.m. The Northern Overtime Exemption is a regulation that exempts employees working north of Township 62 from the hours of work and overtime provisions of The Labour Standards Regulations, 1995. The exemption does not apply to La Ronge, Creighton (and a 10 km radius surrounding each) and Uranium City. Premier Lorne Calvert appointed Ron Harper this spring to examine the Northern Overtime Exemption. Harper will forward a summary of recommendations based on his consultations to Cabinet this fall.
