GARY TINKER RECEIVES SASKATCHEWAN CENTENNIAL MEDAL

Northern Affairs Minister and Athabasca MLA Buckley Belanger presented the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal to Gary Tinker from the Gary Tinker Federation in La Ronge today.

The Gary Tinker Federation, founded by its namesake, is a non-profit organization established in 1989 to identify and address the needs of disabled persons in northern Saskatchewan.

"The Saskatchewan Centennial Medal pays tribute to the people who have made this province a place of which we can be proud," Belanger said. "Mr. Tinker has contributed in many ways in assisting our citizens to have a better quality of life."

The commemorative medal recognizes and honours the important role individuals have played in the development of communities in the province.

Recipients are selected based on the recommendation of governmental and non-governmental organizations and Members of the Legislative Assembly. Community leaders, MLAs, MPs and judges will also receive the medal.

"Our provincial motto 'from many peoples strength' can be seen by individuals like Mr. Tinker who are making change in this province, despite the challenges they face. Mr. Tinker has led the way in creating greater awareness in the area of disabilities in the North," Provincial Secretary and Cumberland MLA Joan Beatty said. "The medal provides us with an opportunity to honour people and thank them for their many contributions."

Approximately 4,000 Saskatchewan Centennial Medals will be presented to individuals at ceremonies held throughout the province this year.
