PARKS TO BE OPEN MAY LONG WEEKEND

Saskatchewan Environment is responding to public concerns over its decision to delay the opening of 12 provincial parks and recreation sites until mid-June. All parks and recreation sites will now be open on the May long weekend and through the summer season.

"We have been open and interested in listening to what people have had to say about this issue," Environment Minister David Forbes said. "We appreciate that many people have concerns, and we are sensitive to people's issues. That is why we are responding."

When the May long weekend arrives, our provincial parks and recreation sites will be open to park visitors as usual.

The decision to adjust park-operating seasons was intended to reduce costs by adjusting service to match historical customer demand and use early in the season. Saskatchewan Environment will find savings from reducing park maintenance after the summer recreation season ends.

"I certainly appreciate the interest that this issue has raised," Forbes said. "The people of Saskatchewan value our provincial parks and I look forward to their continued support and use of our parks during this coming spring and summer season."
