News Release - May 5, 2006 SCN CELEBRATES 15 YEARS AS SASKATCHEWAN'S STORYTELLER
May 2006 marks SCN's 15th anniversary. Since 1991, Saskatchewan's Storyteller has televised more Saskatchewan stories than any other local broadcaster.
"Having our own public educational broadcaster in Saskatchewan has proven beneficial to the entire province," Minister responsible for SCN Glenn Hagel said. "Not only does SCN broadcast stories about our own unique prairie and northern culture, but its support of Saskatchewan's growing film and TV industry translates to jobs for Saskatchewan people." SCN is the regional, public broadcaster that delivers cultural, informational and educational programming and acts as an enabler for the regional film and television industry. Over 15 years, SCN has supported and broadcast an impressive roster of regional series and specials about Saskatchewan people and events. Saskatchewan's independent producers value SCN, often their first broadcast window and platform to attract further financing for their work. With SCN's support, the overall number of people who make a living in Saskatchewan's film and TV industry has more than doubled in less than 10 years. "Even our numbers tell a story – since 1991, SCN has been involved with over 600 local productions about our own people, places, events and history," SCN President and CEO Ken Alecxe said. "Our staff has grown from six to 30, and we generate work for literally hundreds of local suppliers around the province. We're proud of our vital role in building this dynamic industry, and look forward to more growth in the future." SCN will celebrate its 15-year milestone throughout 2006, hosting open houses in various communities and continuing to support and broadcast more regional programming. As Saskatchewan's public educational broadcaster, SCN delivers commercial-free stories that celebrate our culture and connect the people of our region on cable, wireless, digital and satellite television networks. SCN is a modern storyteller in the ancient tradition…carrying out its roles as teacher, entertainer and keeper of cultural values. -30- For More Information, Contact:
