MORE PROTECTION FOR SASKATCHEWAN FIREFIGHTERS

The Saskatchewan Legislature has passed legislation increasing workers' compensation protection for full-time, professional firefighters.

Esophageal cancer is now included in the list of cancers presumed to be occupational diseases for Saskatchewan's firefighters unless there is evidence to the contrary.

"I'm pleased that we've been able to provide further compensation protection for firefighters who face a number of occupational risks in their everyday work," Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said. "This measure will certainly provide some relief for firefighters and their families."

With passage of the legislation, regulations will now be amended to establish the minimum employment requirement period.

"I want to thank the government for doing the right thing," Saskatchewan Professional Firefighters Association President Kirby Benning said. "This is important legislation in the protection of firefighters throughout the province."

There are close to 700 full-time, professional firefighters in Saskatchewan. No incremental costs to the Workers Compensation Board are expected since esophageal cancer claims are already accepted by the board if there is sufficient evidence establishing a causal link to the work performed.
