SASK SCENE PROJECT LAUNCHED

Aspiring young filmmakers will be on the road this summer, capturing the hopes and dreams of Saskatchewan young people on camera.

Sask Scene, a youth-focused vignette production project, was officially launched today. Part of the Our Future is Wide Open campaign, the project is a partnership between the Government of Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College (SIFC), and the arts and cultural community in Saskatchewan.

Students from the SIFC Indian Communication Arts program (INCA) will interview other young people at cultural events and arts festivals around the province and record video vignettes of their take on life in Saskatchewan.

The vignettes will then be published to the Sask Scene website at www.saskscene.ca and will be available for broadcast. They will also serve as a record of the cultural events.

"The novel vignette project, proposed by INCA, will help develop the skills of the Communication Arts students and, at the same time, deliver a multimedia product that will raise awareness among all young people in the province," Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said. "We welcome Saskatchewan's youth to be active participants in the wide open future of this province."

The purpose of the project, in addition to skill-development for the students, is to provide young people with a medium to express their opinions about Saskatchewan as a place to build a career and a future. The project will help build awareness among young people of opportunities in the province.

"The Sask Scene Team of young videographers will benefit from the hands-on learning experience doing interviews, recording, editing and incorporating other multimedia," Jo-Ann Episkenew, Dean of Academics, SIFC said. "That knowledge will go with them as their careers unfold."

The Sask Scene Team will travel to communities including Duck Lake, Big River, Carry the Kettle, Gravelbourg, Prince Albert, Emma Lake, Coronach, Regina Beach, Maple Creek, North Battleford, Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon, Batoche and Fort Qu'Appelle.
