News Release - March 7, 2006 SETTLEMENTS REACHED IN MARTENSVILLE LAWSUITS
Settlements have been reached in lawsuits filed against the Government of Saskatchewan and others by James Elstad and Edward Revesz.
Under the terms of the agreements, the Government of Saskatchewan will pay Mr. Elstad $142,500 as part of a $285,000 settlement and will pay Mr. Revesz $87,500 as part of a $175,000 settlement. "These lawsuits arose out of an investigation and prosecution of allegations of sexual abuse of children," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. "Sexual abuse is one of the most sensitive and difficult issues dealt with by our criminal justice system. The difficulties are further complicated when the victims are children." "In recent years, it has been recognized child victims and witnesses cannot be treated in the same way as adult victims and witnesses," Quennell said. "The justice system's knowledge and ability to deal effectively with child witnesses continues to develop." In addition to the settlements announced today, settlements have been reached with Ron and Linda Sterling, John Popowich and Darren Sabourin. -30- For More Information, Contact:
