PROVINCE INVESTS IN IMMIGRATION

The provincial government's ambitious new immigration strategy will be highlighted this evening by the Minister responsible for Immigration Pat Atkinson during the Regina Open Door Society's Employers Recognition and Information Night.

The province has committed $6.3 million this year, up from $1.7 million in 2005-2006, to support increased immigration to Saskatchewan and enhancements to settlement and integration services for newcomers.

"A healthy economy provides opportunities for jobs for Saskatchewan residents and for new Canadians who we welcome into our province," Atkinson said. "The province's comprehensive strategy will attract more immigrants to Saskatchewan, help them settle in our communities and encourage them to stay."

The Saskatchewan Immigration Nominee Program will attract 1,500 nominees each year by 2008-2009. Including spouses and children, this will result in 5,000 new immigrants arriving each year.

The comprehensive immigration strategy includes programs and services to address employment, language, literacy, essential skills and other settlement needs.

Minister Atkinson will also congratulate the 20 employers who will receive plaques from the Regina Open Door Society for their participation in the society's Employment Services Program.

"Employers do more than provide jobs to newcomers. By opening their workplaces, employers create welcoming opportunities for newcomers to participate more fully in the life of communities and the future of our province," Atkinson said.
