News Release - June 2, 2011 STATEMENT BY PREMIER BRAD WALLPremier Brad Wall today issued the following statement on the evacuation and firefighting efforts in the northern communities of Wollaston Lake and Hatchet Lake First Nation: On behalf of a grateful province, I would like to thank everyone involved in the massive effort to protect the people and property of Wollaston Lake and Hatchet Lake First Nation. This effort has involved individuals from many government ministries, RCMP, private citizens and now the Canadian Armed Forces. To everyone involved in this difficult and often dangerous task, thank you. Thank you as well to those volunteers who are now helping the evacuated individuals in temporary shelters in Prince Albert and Saskatoon. The events of the past few days are a reminder that there are many people in our province who routinely make tremendous sacrifices for others. In the worst situations, we see the best of Saskatchewan people. Last night, the difficult evacuation process was completed due to the assistance of the Canadian Armed Forces. This too is a reminder that a well-trained, well-equipped Armed Forces serves and protects our country not only abroad, but also here at home. My office was in contact with the Prime Minister's Office yesterday, and I also want to thank them for their assistance in ensuring the swift response from the Department of National Defence. The fire continues to threaten the communities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Wollaston Lake and Hatchet Lake First Nation, and with those who continue to fight the fire and protect the communities. Our hope is that the fire can be brought under control safely and swiftly, and that everyone can return home soon. -30- For more information, contact:
