News Release - November 1, 2005 SPECIAL ROOM FOR VICTIM/WITNESS INTERVIEWS IN NIPAWIN RECEIVES FUNDING
A specially designed room in the new Nipawin RCMP detachment building will be developed with funding from the provincial government.
The soft room will be designed, constructed and furnished so that victim/witness interviews can take place in a comfortable and non-threatening manner. RCMP, Saskatchewan Community Resources and Employment and other agencies will use the soft room. A total of $5,000 will be used for the purchase of professional quality audio-visual equipment for interviewing child victims of sexual and physical abuse, other vulnerable victims and witnesses. The recordings can be used for further investigation, transcripts or evidence in court. "It is very important to help victims or witnesses of crime – especially children – feel less traumatized by the criminal justice process following a violent crime," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. "This new soft room is useful in making these victims or witnesses feel safe and protected during the interview process." Saskatchewan's Victims Services Program has funded the establishment of 29 soft rooms in 25 Saskatchewan communities. The soft rooms are available for use by investigators throughout each region of the province. Oct. 31st to Nov. 6th marks Victims Services Week, with events that aim to increase understanding about the needs of victims of crime, and recognize the contribution of hundreds of volunteers in Victims Services Programs across the province. -30- For More Information, Contact:
