SASKATCHEWAN RECORDS HIGHEST DECLINE IN EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE NUMBERS

Fewer people than ever in Saskatchewan are receiving regular Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.

"Our strong economic growth is having a positive effect on people in our province," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "With our growing workforce we are building a strong foundation of skilled individuals who will continue to build a secure and prosperous future for the people of our province."

There were 7,650 people receiving regular EI benefits in April 2008. That's a decrease of 4.6 per cent from March 2008. This is the highest decrease in EI beneficiaries across Canada. Saskatchewan also recorded the largest year-over-year decline in regular beneficiaries at 16 per cent.

"Our government is continuing to sustain our economic momentum and improve the quality of life for all people in our province," Norris said. "These decreasing EI numbers show we are on the right path and that Saskatchewan is continuing to move forward as a leader in Canada."
