DISCOUNTED BUS PASSES MAKE TRANSIT MORE AFFORDABLE IN MOOSE JAW

The City of Moose Jaw is now offering reduced bus fares to low-income residents, thanks to a partnership with the Province.

Approximately 4,500 low-income residents will be eligible to purchase monthly bus passes at a reduced cost of $15, beginning June 1st. Adult transit passes in Moose Jaw normally cost $52. City Council agreed to reduce the rates for a trial period of one year. The province will contribute a minimum of $45,000, based on the number of passes sold during the one-year period.

"By making public transportation in Moose Jaw more affordable, we are making it easier for low-income people to go to work, to look for jobs, to take education or training, and to participate in their community," Learning Minister and Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA Deb Higgins said on behalf of Community Resources Minister Buckley Belanger. "We are pleased that the City of Moose Jaw has decided to team up with us and make this valuable program available to its residents."

"I wish to congratulate the provincial government for introducing this very worthwhile program," Moose Jaw Mayor Al Schwinghamer said. "By making public transportation more affordable, it will increase the opportunity for mobility for low-income residents in our city. We are pleased to team with the provincial government in the discounted bus pass program which we feel will be a very valuable service to our community."

The City of Moose Jaw will administer the reduced transit pass project to eligible residents, who include people on the Saskatchewan Assistance Plan, the Transitional Employment Allowance, Saskatchewan Employment Supplement and the Provincial Training Allowance.

The discounted passes will be available from the cashier at City Hall. Eligible clients are required to provide proof of eligibility, such as a statement of benefit. More information is available by calling City of Moose Jaw Transit office (306) 694-4488.
