News Release - January 28, 2004 PUBLIC CONFIDENT IN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
Saskatchewan people are confident in the province's health care system. This view is reflected in a Saskatchewan Health poll released today as part of the government's release of third quarter polling results. Over 5,100 Saskatchewan people were surveyed in all 12 of the province's Regional Health Authorities (RHAs).
The research stems from The Action Plan for Saskatchewan Health Care launched in December 2001. The Public Confidence Indicator study is part of a series of initiatives to promote quality and accountability in the health care system. "This study is another example of how our government is listening to Saskatchewan people as we work with RHA's to make the changes necessary to ensure our health care system is quality focused and sustainable into the future," Health Minister John Nilson said. Eighty per cent of respondents indicated they agreed or strongly agreed that they were treated fairly by the health care system. An equal proportion said they were treated with respect when they received care. The report's authors conclude: "This study is broadly positive for Saskatchewan health care. Despite a modest level of concern about sustainability, the overall results show a substantial level of confidence in the system, its operations and in satisfaction with care." Responses were provided on a scale of one to five, with highest score reflecting the greatest level of confidence. The average response for 13 of the 16 confidence indicators exceeded the mid-point. The results will be used as a benchmark for future measurement of public confidence. "The results reinforce that when people come in direct contact with the health care system they are more likely to rate it favourably, especially in terms of service quality," Nilson said. Thirteen reports were produced including a provincial summary and individual studies for each of the province's 12 health regions. The total cost for this research was $98,819. The reports are available on the Saskatchewan Health Web site at www.health.gov.sk.ca. No omnibus polling was conducted in October or December. The results of 17 budget-related questions undertaken in November will be released post-Budget. -30- For More Information, Contact:
