News Release - April 17, 2003 SKATEBOARDING GUIDELINES OUTLINED
Mark Wartman, Minister responsible for Wascana Centre Authority today affirmed the provincial government's interest in ensuring that young people, including skateboarders, frisbee players, and others have access to use the Legislative Grounds and Wascana Park for their activities.
"With respect to skateboarding, or any other recreational activity, it continues to be the government's intention to control access to the area around the Legislative Building to ensure that no damage occurs to the building and that people using the building are not inconvenienced," Wartman said. Minister Wartman announced that, in conjunction with the Wascana Centre Authority and SPMC, the concept of creating an area for skateboarding, including future construction of a facility designed specifically for skateboarding, is being considered but that it is unlikely any such space or facility will be operational until later this year. Until a dedicated skateboard area can be set up, arrangements are being made to designate the east sidewalk in front of the Legislature Building to be available for skateboarding. SPMC will arrange for several structures to be put in place for skateboard use while plans for a permanent facility are developed. Areas around the Legislative Building that are off-limits to recreational activities will be clearly posted and monitored by security staff. Signs will be posted designating the area that can be used for skateboarding, encouraging helmet use and ensuring awareness that skateboarding is undertaken at the public's own risk. The Legislative Building grounds will continue to be monitored by security staff. -30- For More Information, Contact:
