BUILDING ECONOMIC AND EDUCATION CONNECTIONS WITH INDIA

Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris leads a delegation of government, industry, science and university officials to India on June 1.

The 10-day mission includes a series of meetings with Indian government and university representatives in a bid to increase both economic and education ties between the two jurisdictions. The group also plans to participate in the largest Bio Tech conference in India.

"Saskatchewan is home to one third of Canada's agriculture bio-tech sector and this will be an excellent opportunity to attract investment and entrepreneurship here," Norris said. "We are confident that this initiative will lead to more jobs and economic prosperity for our province in the long-term."

Saskatchewan is the largest trading partner with India among Canadian provinces with major exports including potash and pulse crops.

"This trip is a great idea to attract investment and Indian immigrants," India-Canada Association of Saskatchewan President Yashu Bither said. "The changes in India are dramatic and this will give the Minister and his group first-hand knowledge of what is happening."

"This is a very important trip and timely, given the economic growth of India and the growing Indian population in Saskatoon and the rest of Saskatchewan," Saskatoon India-Canada Cultural Association President Dr. Kalyani Premkumar said. "This is very encouraging."

Participants in the mission include representatives from the Universities of Saskatchewan, University of Regina, SIAST, Canadian Light Source, Genome Prairie and Saskatchewan Pulse Growers.
