News Release - April 23, 2003 SIFC RECEIVES FUNDING FOR INDIGENOUS HEALTH RESEARCH
A new health research facility that will engage Aboriginal people to find solutions to their unique health needs is receiving an additional provincial investment of $100,000.
Industry and Resources will provide funding toward operating costs of the Indigenous Peoples Health Research Centre (IPHRC), a collaborative effort of the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College, the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan. The funding complements the $2.7 million over six years that Saskatchewan Health earlier announced and the $3 million grant, distributed over six years, provided by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Funding for the project comes from the Innovation and Science Fund, which supports science, research and innovation in Saskatchewan universities, colleges, and research institutes. "The Indigenous Peoples Health Research Centre is a welcome addition to the thriving research community that Saskatchewan has nurtured," Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said. "It will carry out vital research in health disparity issues that exist between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in Canada and ultimately, contribute to the health and well-being of Aboriginal citizens throughout the country." The facility will conduct research on Indigenous health issues and contribute to better health service delivery for Aboriginal people in Saskatchewan and in Canada. The research focuses are chronic diseases, indigenous healing, health delivery, and disease prevention and environmental health. -30- For More Information, Contact:
