FAMILY RENTAL HOUSING PROJECT OPENS IN LA LOCHE

Eight northern Saskatchewan families in need of housing will now have an affordable, safe place to call home, with help from the province and the La Loche Municipal Non-Profit Housing Corporation. The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), contributed approximately $1.23 million toward this project.

"Our government is pleased to work with our partners in northern communities to help create homes that are affordable for more Métis families in need of housing," Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "These homes are an important step forward in improving the supply of housing in La Loche, and in the north. Most importantly, eight more families will be able to put down roots in a stable neighbourhood and become a part of the community."

The project consists of eight two-bedroom units, built as four semi-detached buildings in La Loche.

SHC continues to work with the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors to develop new housing opportunities in northern Saskatchewan. Since November 2007, SHC invested $18.7 million in 24 housing projects across the north, creating 103 housing units for families, 28 units for seniors and another 16 units for singles.

The Government of Saskatchewan has committed $344 million since March 2011 to housing initiatives. These investments are expected to result in more than 12,600 new and rejuvenated housing units in the province.
