CITIZENS RECEIVE PROVINCE'S HIGHEST HONOUR

Lieutenant Governor Lynda Haverstock announced the recipients of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit today.

The Order of Merit is the province's highest honour and recognizes outstanding contributions in the arts, business, the professions, research, education, community leadership and public service.

"The six recipients of this prestigious award represent the best of Saskatchewan, and illustrate the depth and commitment of talented individuals in this province," Haverstock said. "This group of distinguished individuals has continued a Saskatchewan tradition of excellence and service that exemplifies our province's spirit."

The recipients are: international authority in veterinary virology and immunology Dr. Lorne Babiuk; advocate of the arts and Yorkton community leader Margaret Cugnet; Bernard Michel, retired Chief Executive Officer of Cameco Corporation who was instrumental in bringing the synchrotron to Saskatchewan; former Saskatchewan Premier and Chair of the Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada, Roy Romanow; acclaimed ceramic artist Jack Sures; and Guy Vanderhaeghe, one of Saskatchewan's most gifted writers.

Including the six new members, there have been 115 appointments to the Order of Merit in the 19 years since its inception in 1985.

The Lieutenant Governor will bestow the Saskatchewan Order of Merit on the recipients at an investiture ceremony later this year in Saskatoon.
