EIGHT CITIZENS RECEIVE SASKATCHEWAN’S HIGHEST HONOUR

Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield invested eight people into the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in Saskatoon today.

"It's a great privilege to honour such impressive individuals," Solomon Schofield said. "They are each visionaries and innovators, leaders and mentors, who have made enormous contributions to our province and our nation."

This year's recipients are:

  • Mr. Raymond E. Ahenakew, First Nations leader - Ahtahkakoop First Nation/Cochin;
  • Mr. Bruce W. Beatty, C.M., C.D. (posthumous), graphic artist - Ottawa; 
  • Ms. Sandra L. Birdsell, C.M., author and teacher - Regina;
  • Dr. Barbara Keirnes Young, educator - Regina; 
  • Mr. W. Thomas Molloy, O.C., Q.C., LL.B., LL.D., lawyer - Saskatoon; 
  • Dr. Brian G. Rossnagel, professor emeritus - Saskatoon; 
  • Mr. David A. Thauberger, C.M., artist - Regina; and
  • Mr. W. Brett Wilson, C.M., LL.D., entrepreneur, community leader and philanthropist - Calgary.

The Saskatchewan Order of Merit is the province's highest honour, recognizing individuals who have contributed significantly to the well-being of the province and its residents. Including the eight new members, there have been 193 appointments to the Order of Merit since its inception in 1985.
