EXHIBIT HONOURING GREAT CANADIANS OPENS AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE

What do Wayne Gretzky, Céline Dion and Peter Mansbridge have in common?  They have all received our nation’s highest honour, the Order of Canada.  Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield will officially open an exhibit celebrating Canada’s national honours and the extraordinary contributions of Canadians at Government House in Regina tonight.

“We are very excited that Government House will be the first venue outside of Ottawa to host this fascinating exhibit,” Schofield said.  “I invite everyone to visit 'From Far and Wide – Honouring Great Canadians' the experience will make you truly proud of the amazing people who have received one of our national honours.”

This exhibit includes authentic historical medals and multimedia features.  It is open to the public during regular hours and will remain on display until January 2014 as Government House’s feature exhibit.

“From Far and Wide - Honouring Great Canadians allows people from Saskatchewan and those new to our province an opportunity to explore some of our Canadian history and pay tribute to these great Canadians and their contributions that have helped shape our nation,” Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Kevin Doherty said.  “This exhibit is a great addition to Government House and I encourage everyone to check it out.”

Governor General of Canada David Johnston originally opened this exhibit at Rideau Hall May 17, 2012, where it was on display until November 2012.  Over the course of six months, it saw more than 36,000 visitors.

Government House was built in 1891 and first served as the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of the North-West Territories.  Restored to the period of Lieutenant Governor Amédée Forget who was in office from 1898-1910, the museum offers a glimpse of life at Government House at the turn of the 20th century.  Engaging experiences for children and visitors alike are offered at Government House year-round, including activities in the Edwardian Gardens during the summer which provide a welcoming green space so visitors can enjoy the richness and beauty of this heritage landmark.
