NEW FAMILY HOUSING COMPLEX TO BE BUILT IN SASKATOON

Provincial and municipal partners gathered in Saskatoon today to announce funding of a 55-unit affordable rental housing project for low-income families under the Centenary Affordable Housing Program (CAHP).

Included in the project is a 37-unit apartment building with two, three and four-bedroom units, and an 18-unit complex featuring two and three-bedroom townhouses that may be offered as affordable homeownership opportunities in the future.

The project will be located in the Pleasant Hill neighbourhood of Saskatoon, and will be managed by the Saskatoon Housing Authority on behalf of the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. The Saskatoon Housing Authority will also have a satellite office within the apartment building.

In addition to providing more affordable housing in Saskatoon, this project also contributes to the rejuvenation of the Pleasant Hill neighbourhood.

"We are pleased to be able to help families obtain safe, affordable homes in Saskatoon through this exciting new development," Community Resources Minister Buckley Belanger said. "This project is an excellent fit with HomeFirst, our provincial housing strategy which is creating more housing choices for people. Through federal, provincial and community partnerships, we are helping to make life better and build a future for Saskatchewan families."

"This innovative project strengthens our community by providing residents with safe and nurturing homes where they can raise their children," Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison said. "Through this partnership, we are very proud to help our residents, which in turn, helps the future of Saskatoon."

The total cost of the project is estimated to be approximately $10 million. Under CAHP, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation is contributing $5 million, the province $4 million and the City of Saskatoon $1 million.
