News Release - June 16, 2008 APRIL CAR SALES UPSaskatchewan consumers are opening up their wallets and buying more new vehicles than almost anywhere in Canada. Statistics Canada released the figures for April new motor vehicle sales which indicate Saskatchewan had a 17.6 per cent increase in sales compared with April 2007 (seasonally unadjusted). The percentage increase in new car sales was the second highest in Canada, with New Brunswick reporting a 24.3 per cent increase. Nationally, new motor vehicle sales increased by four per cent. "Buying a new vehicle is a major household expense, and you do not make that decision without having a high level of confidence about the economy," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "There have been glowing reports when it comes to almost every economic indicator and forecast about the province's economy in the past few months. Our government plans to build on this strong foundation and bring even more opportunities and prosperity to Saskatchewan families." On a year-to-date basis, from January to April 2008, Saskatchewan's new vehicle sales are up by 21 per cent, the second highest in Canada. Newfoundland recorded a 21.2 per cent increase (seasonally unadjusted). Seasonally adjusted, new motor vehicle sales decreased by 7.1 per cent between March 2008 and April 2008.
