HONOURING SASKATCHEWAN'S PROTECTIVE SERVICES PERSONNEL

Lieutenant Governor Lynda Haverstock presented the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal in Saskatoon today. The medal recognizes individuals who have 25 years of exemplary service protecting the people of Saskatchewan or their property. This can be in either a volunteer or a full-time capacity.

Recipients receiving the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal at the ceremony today included:

• Municipal police from Saskatoon and Prince Albert;

• Fire protection personnel from Saskatoon, Prince Albert, North Battleford, Martensville, Warman, Cudworth, Carrot River and Laird;

• Emergency medical personnel from Saskatoon and Meadow Lake;

• Correction workers from Saskatoon and Prince Albert;

• Environment personnel from Prince Albert, Big River, Chitek Lake and Porcupine Plain;

• A Canada Border Service Agency member from Saskatoon; and

• A Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation traffic officer from Melfort.

"Working in the protective services field requires a special kind of person. It is important to recognize individuals who have dedicated much of their lives to protect the people and property of our province," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said on behalf of Provincial Secretary Glenn Hagel. "I am pleased that we have the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal as a way to honour those who play a special role in our security and quality of life."

The Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal is part of the provincial honours and awards program. More information on the program is available at www.gr.gov.sk.ca/protocol.

The Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal was announced by Premier Lorne Calvert in 2002. The medal is part of the Saskatchewan Honours Program that includes the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal and the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal. The provincial Office of Protocol and Honours administers the program in close co-operation with the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police, Saskatchewan Firefighters Association and other agencies whose personnel are eligible for the honour.
