SASKATCHEWAN AMONG NATION’S LEADERS IN URBAN HOUSING STARTS

Urban housing construction continues to show substantial growth in Saskatchewan, particularly in relation to the rest of the country, according to a report released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

In August 2010, urban housing starts in Saskatchewan increased by 32 per cent, compared to August 2009. Saskatchewan ranked third among the provinces in terms of percentage change.

In the first eight months of this year, urban housing starts in Saskatchewan increased by 70 per cent, compared to the same period in 2009. Saskatchewan ranked third among the provinces in terms of percentage change as well.

"Saskatchewan's sustained growth in housing construction activity is a good indicator of our economic tempo," Enterprise Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "Along with our increasing population and strong employment numbers, this helps make the case that Saskatchewan is one of the most popular places across Canada to make a living and have a home."

Construction starts on single family dwellings in August 2010 were up by 44 per cent, while multiple units were up by 22 per cent, compared to August 2009.
