CMEC MEETING WITH NATIONAL ABORIGINAL LEADERS

Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris is attending the 99th Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) meeting today and tomorrow in Toronto.

As part of CMEC's commitment to improving the education outcomes of Canada's Aboriginal students, Norris has a key role in facilitating discussions with leaders and representatives of Canada's national Aboriginal organizations (NAOs) - the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP), Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK), the Métis National Council (MNC) and the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC).

"The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to helping eliminate the gap in academic achievement, graduation rates and employment between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people," Norris said. "Together with my counterparts across Canada, we are talking with national Aboriginal leaders about moving forward on this important work."

A number of other topics are being discussed by the Ministers of Education and Advanced Education, including early-childhood learning and development, international education, and education data and research initiatives.

CMEC provides leadership in education at pan-Canadian and international levels.
