News Release - June 7, 2005 SASKPOWER POSTER CONTEST CELEBRATES ENVIRONMENT WEEK
In honour of Environment Week, SaskPower presented over $3,000 worth of prizes to the winners of the fourth annual Energy and Our Environment poster contest, sponsored by the SaskPower Shand Greenhouse.
The prizes were awarded to Cassandra Sullivan of St. Henry's Jr. Elementary School in Melville and Brody Starr of Balcarres Community School today. "This poster contest is just one of the ways SaskPower helps to educate our province's young people about the effects of climate change," Minister responsible for SaskPower Frank Quennell said. "It is encouraging to see the tremendous response to this contest, and the quality, creativity and originality of the posters submitted." The Energy and Our Environment poster contest is open to grades five and six students across the province. Two other grand-prize winners, Elisabeth Fortier of Ecole Zenon Park School and Brett Westman of North West Central School in Plenty will receive their prizes the week of June 13th. "Sponsoring this poster contest raises awareness of the importance of environmental responsibility," Planning, Environment and Regulatory Affairs SaskPower vice-president Rick Patrick said. "Response to the contest continues to grow, indicating that our province's young people are thinking about ways we can all help to address the issue of climate change." A winning poster was selected from each school that entered the contest; with the top four posters selected from this smaller group. In addition to the individual prizes, each of the top four winners' schools will receive climate change materials for the school library, and a cheque for $250 toward the purchase of trees from a local nursery to be planted on school grounds. Winning posters can be viewed online at saskpower.com. -30- For More Information, Contact:
