CELEBRATING EDUCATION WEEK IN SASKATCHEWAN

Education Week 2005 was launched today at Judge Bryant School in Regina. Learning Minister Andrew Thomson spent the early afternoon reading to a group of Grade 3 students, emphasizing the importance of youth literacy. The book chosen, The Lake in the Middle of Town, was written by Neil Sawatzky and illustrated by Julio Salazar, both of whom are Regina residents.

Education Week 2005 is being celebrated Oct. 16th-22nd with various public activities in Saskatchewan educational institutions that demonstrate the quality of Saskatchewan's public education system. This year's Education Week theme is Celebrate Learning! Celebrate Saskatchewan! The theme was chosen to reflect that 2005, as Saskatchewan's centennial, is a time to celebrate our growth and successes in all levels of education.

"Saskatchewan's centennial year provides an opportunity to celebrate both our past successes and our bright future, in education as in other areas," Minister Thomson said. "As we begin our second century as a province, investing in education is one of the best ways to ensure Saskatchewan continues to be the best place in Canada to live, work and raise a family."

In addition to today's event, other Education Week activities have been planned. These include the official launch of the Encyclopaedia Britannica Online at St. Edward School, Saskatoon at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19th; a Centennial Merit Scholarship announcement at Prince Albert's SIAST campus at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20th; and the Grand Opening of Vincent Massey Community School, Prince Albert at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20th.
