SASKATCHEWAN RETAILERS BUSY IN NOVEMBER WITH RECORD SALES

November was a record month for retail trade in Saskatchewan and sales totalled $1.48 billion.  Saskatchewan ranked third among provinces with a percentage increase on year-over-year and on a monthly basis, according to Statistics Canada.

“There are a number of issues at play here, including a strong and diverse Saskatchewan economy, more people living and working here, and increases in average weekly earnings that are responsible for the growth in retail sales,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said.  “That’s good news for our vibrant retail sector, and is really important in keeping our economy moving forward.”

On an annual basis, retail sales were up 4.3 per cent in November 2012 compared to November 2011.  That’s almost three times the rate of the national increase of 1.4 per cent over this period.

Monthly, sales were also up by 0.3 per cent between October 2012 and November 2012.  On the national front, sales were up 0.2 per cent.

“It’s important to see growth in the retail industry as it points to improved consumer optimism,” Boyd said.  “Saskatchewan people are comfortable with their financial situation, and at the same time, are confident that our provincial economy has a solid foundation to support economic growth today and in the future.”
